DC Metro Area Transit - BOS and More

Please feel free to give feedback on this map or anything else that's at least somewhat relevant! This map of Metro and other urban transit (mostly rail except commuter rail) is primarily inspired by WMATA's Blue/Orange/Silver (BOS or BL/OR/SV) Capacity & Reliability Study and uses aspects of all four different new-build alternatives. Major Features: Metro - Elimination of all triple-interlining in the Metro system. All lines can reliably run as frequently as every 5-6 minutes as a result (2.5-3 minutes on the Red Line). - Various infill stations have been added to most lines of the Metro system to minimize coverage gaps. - Extensions of various Metro lines. I avoided including extensions that would overlap with existing commuter rail lines as this plan presumes all-day expanded MARC and VRE service. The only exception to this rule is the Red Line northwestern extension from Shady Grove to Metropolitan Grove to serve the NIST campus. The Red Line short turns that operate only during weekday peak periods have been extended to Shady Grove. - Rosslyn and Pentagon stations are rebuilt into stacked islands providing same-direction cross-platform transfers. (This may be unrealistic due to the structure of the stations.) - New pedestrian tunnels are built between Farragut West, Farragut North, and Longfellow Park (new downtown trunk station served by BL/GD). - The Yellow Line is rerouted into a new tunnel north of Columbia Heights, mostly following Georgia Avenue to reach Silver Spring. This is to serve the busy Georgia Avenue/14th Street/16th Street corridors, which are all high ridership bus corridors at present. - The Blue Line is now a spiral line/figure-6 shape like the London Underground Circle Line or Toei (Tokyo) Oedo Line. It uses the BL to National Harbor alternative (Bloop) alignment but with a southward extension from Huntington to Fort Belvoir. Trains run from Fort Belvoir to Huntington, continue on the original Blue Line to Rosslyn, serve all stations in the new downtown tunnel until Union Station, then turn southward going via Capitol South, Navy Yard, Bolling AFB, and Oxon Hill to reach National Harbor before taking the Woodrow Wilson Bridge back to Huntington, then do everything in reverse. Additionally, some Blue Line trains through-run with the Pink Line, running between Huntington (BL) and Annandale (PK) and switching colors at Capitol South. - The Gold Line is a new color service using the new downtown tunnel and other new trackage based on the SV to New Carrollton and SV Express in VA alternatives. It runs express (non-stop) between Ballston-MU and Rosslyn, mostly underneath the existing tracks. Service stops daily around 9:30pm. While the Gold Line is operating, westbound Silver Line trains short-turn at Wiehle-Reston East instead of running all the way to Ashburn. - In addition to being shortened on its western end during service hours of the Gold Line, the Silver Line also has a slightly different route in Virginia, now serving West Falls Church but not East Falls Church. - The Pink Line is a new color service using new trackage based on the BL to Greenbelt alternative, in addition to a new section following Columbia Pike, Little River Turnpike, and Route 50 between Pentagon and Chantilly. As mentioned above, some trains through-run with the Blue Line. Light Rail/Other - The Purple Line light rail continues into Virginia and acts as a circumferential line. It will be jointly operated by Maryland MTA and NVTC. - The W&OD section between Leesburg and East Falls Church is reactivated as an interurban service. (Alternatively, it could be built as commuter rail.) The removal of triple-interlining in the system can be accomplished without building any new stations, while only building a very short distance of new revenue tracks underneath Falls Church Yard to connect the west of West Falls Church station directly with the Silver Line tracks to McLean. This allows the Orange Line to run as a shuttle between Vienna and West Falls Church (stopping at the center track with doors opening on both sides for cross-platform transfers to the Silver Line). The Silver Line runs to New Carrollton instead of Largo. All lines can now run peak service of every 6 minutes (3 for the Red Line).
