DC Area Major Transit Expansion (WIP) by

INTRODUCTION: My previous fantasy map was very Virginia-centric, and had some questionable decisions (such as an infill station at Jefferson Memorial, which just isn't worth it). I want to make a more urban-focused map. Some suburban/outer expansions will stay, such as Columbia Pike, but there will be additional focus on urban coverage (most of which will be through an expanded and reimagined DC streetcar network rather than new Metro lines). Some previously included suburban extensions will be replaced by other modes of transit such as commuter rail and express bus service. This is still WIP and grades haven't been fully added (only the Purple Line and Gallows-Backlick Line have them correct). What I want to add: Commuter rail through-running, more BRTs besides Route 7 BRT, various streetcars in the system's core (DC and inner Arlington) WMATA METRORAIL: All colored lines now have 2 distinct service patterns (I and II), with equal service levels, and reverse-branching has mostly been eliminated, except between College Park and Greenbelt. All lines can now run near full capacity without overloading terminals (as WMATA terminal capacity is 15TPH while line capacity is 26TPH). To accomplish this, New Carrollton now has a below-grade island platform below the current island platform used by Blue I trains, with yard access, while Greenbelt has been rebuilt into a dual island platform (one platform each for Blue II and Green II), with all tracks having yard access. Additionally, Rosslyn and Pentagon stations are now stacked islands. Line descriptions: The Red Line is mostly unchanged from today, but has been extended to Olney on its northeastern end. Every other train runs only between Grosvenor and Silver Spring. The Yellow Line will no longer serve current Blue/Yellow stops south of Pentagon. Instead, Branch 1 will begin in Chantilly, following Little River Turnpike (VA-236) to the western terminus of Columbia Pike in Annandale, where Branch 2 joins. It will then follow Little River Turnpike, Beauregard Street, Seminary Road, and Columbia Pike to Pentagon. At Pentagon, it will get separate tracks from the Blue Line. Crossing the river from Pentagon, it will use the Fenwick Bridge as before, but will diverge to a new downtown north-south tunnel (thus completely separating it from the Green Line) while underground near the Wharf. (The original tracks to L'Enfant Plaza will no longer be used for typical revenue service, but will be kept in usable condition for yard movements and temporary service changes.) It will then follow 2nd Street SE/NE and go north to Union Station. The Green Line Branch 1 runs from Branch Avenue to Fort Totten, while the Green Line Branch 2 runs from National Harbor to Greenbelt joining Branch 1 at Anacostia. The Orange Line Branch 1 is the same as today, but Branch 2 absorbs the Silver Line, which now is branded as a branch of the Orange Line. The Blue Line Branch 1 runs from Franconia-Springfield to New Carrollton, but via a new downtown tunnel east of Rosslyn, not sharing any tracks with other lines. Branch 2 runs from Huntington (former Yellow Line) to Greenbelt (the section between College Park and Greenbelt is shared with the Green Line), branching off from Branch 1 at Colmar Manor. My added infill stations listed by real-life line as of June 2025 (may differ from line in my proposal): Red: Montgomery College (serving the Rockville campus), Edmonston/Wootton, New Hampshire Avenue Green: Berwyn Yellow: Slaters Lane, Four Mile Run Blue: Franconia Road, Quaker Lane, Slaters Lane, Four Mile Run, Oklahoma Avenue Orange: Oklahoma Avenue Silver: Oklahoma Avenue Station name changes and rationale (feel free to debate me on these): - Dunn Loring is now Merrifield because that is where most passengers are likely coming from (and the only station exit is to the south of I-66, not the north, so naming it Dunn Loring made no sense back then and especially now.) The Dunn Loring name has been switched to a Purple Line station. Additionally, the Purple Line will stop at Route 29-Mosaic District, which is closer to the Mosaic District (as the name suggests). - Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is now National Airport because it was WAY too long. I also changed the other airport station to simply Dulles Airport. - McLean has been renamed to Scotts Crossing because the downtown core of McLean is now served by a Purple Line station which has taken the name McLean Central. - Cross street references have been added to Vienna, Oakton, and Fair Oaks. - Downtown Largo is now just Largo due to the original name being extremely misleading and unnecessarily complicated. - North Bethesda was misleading so I changed it to Pike & Rose, which makes sense to me considering the old name White Flint was also a mall. - Georgia Ave-Petworth is not the only station on Georgia Ave, so it is now just Petworth. - Stadium-Armory no longer has a stadium nearby, so it is now Hill East-Armory. - I didn't rename Van Dorn Street despite its Confederate name because no other obvious name exists currently, but it should be changed whenever Alexandria renames it. I debated naming it Eisenhower West but didn't. Eisenhower Avenue is now Eisenhower East though. DC AREA LIGHT RAIL+STREETCARS: - Light Rail Purple Line Virginia extension (Bethesda to Tysons with same-platform transfer to Gallows-Backlick Streetcar) - Gallows-Backlick Streetcar Line (Tysons to Franconia-Springfield similar to Fairfax Connector 401/402) - Glebe Road Streetcar (similar to Metrobus A70 south/east of Ballston) - Light Rail Purple Line Largo extension (New Carrollton to PGCC with connection to Largo station) DC AREA BRT: - Credit to the NVTA BRT Action Plan.
