This is a map of possible extensions to the current CTA network that just make sense and can be easily done in the next twenty or thirty years (maybe forty or even fifty) if city administration decides to finally get its crap together. What this means is: No crazy extensions (ok maybe the Green Line extension may be considered a little crazy), and any new lines have to already be proposed. (Looking at you, Circle Line.) All listed changes and their reasons are listed below:
- Five new Yellow Line stations: 3 infill, two extensions. This serves to improve connectivity in the Northern suburbs of Chicago and add stations in currently underserved areas
- Brown Line extension to Jefferson Park: Connects neighborhoods along the Brown Line ROW to the Jefferson Park Transit Center, which allows connections with trains heading in from O'Hare, and allows for cross- network connections, as Jefferson Park is a high- traffic station on Chicago's regional rail system, Metra.
- Added the Nagle infill station to add more points of connection between the network and the city, as well as acting as another point for CTA-Metra connectivity.
- Red Line extension to 130th: This one's already under construction; connects underserved areas of Chicago's South Side, allowing for economic development as commonly seen around transit stations. (https://www.transitchicago.com/rle/)
- Green Line Cottage Grove branch to Stony Island: Allows for cross- modal connectivity between CTA and Metra.
- Green Line Ashland branch to Midway: Adds a greater amount of connections on the South Side, while allowing greater accessibility to and from Midway International Airport. Out of all of these changes, this and the Circle Line are probably the most out- there. (Circle Line coming soon)
- Damen Green Line infill station: Under construction in real life as of 2024, enhances city- system connectivity.
- Orange Line to 83rd/Columbus: Adds service to currently underserved areas, allows for connectivity with Metra
- Pink Line to Oak Park: Adds service to currently underserved areas
- Added the Circle Line, allowing for more crosstown trips that bypass downtown, allowing more viable alternatives to driving when going from different points in the city outside of the Downtown-The Loop area. Out of all changes, this one seems quite out- there, but remember: The simple authorization of construction is likely doable in the next 25-30 years.
- New Central, Foster, and Canfield infill stations on the Blue Line to service more areas with rapid transit on Chicago's west side.
- Addison (Red Line) renamed to Cubs/Addison to follow the naming convention of Sox/35th further down the line.
- Revived the Humboldt Park Branch through the new Blue Line - Major branch that will service denser neighborhoods and add much needed connections on Chicago's West Side. (Correct me on any of this if I'm wrong)
- Added Harvard/63rd station infill, adds another connection point between the Red Line and the Green Line at the southernmost point at which the lines meet.
- Added the Orleans/Division station: Allows a point of intersection between the Circle Line and the Brown/Purple Lines
- Added an infill station for the United Center, connects a place with high demand to the system
- Added numerous BRT systems, which serve to connect outer neighborhoods of Chicago on large avenues that currently hold some of the city's busiest local bus routes. The Orange Line has also been extended to 95th/Kedzie to connect with BRT.
