Like many systems designed during the 1960s, the Detroit Metro would focus on linking far-flung suburbs with the city center while trying to minimize stops to increase speeds. However, it would also have the goal of linking many major suburban employment centers, such as General Motors facilities and the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. The lines would all converge at a multi-level transfer station at Campus Martius. The lines would run 6-car trains at frequencies of every 6-18 minutes. Many lines would be built alongside freight tracks, highways or in underground tunnels in order to reduce opposition from NIMBYs.
