Çanakkale City Trams

Map is Public

Three hypothetical tram lines for the relatively small and walkable but rather difficult to traverse city of Çanakkale. The present public transportation infrastructure is dependant on only buses, which mainly travel on a north-south axis or meander the small streets to cover a west-east axis. The problem with the bus infrastructure is everybody on either axis needs to go to the main university/hospital campus, city centre/coast, intercity bus terminal/cemetery, and their homes in the north. It gets crowded both inside the bus and outside as traffic, because the lay of the city has some chokepoints. Namely, the crossings on Sarıçay, the gap between the airport land and the coast, and the few roundabout intersections on the arterial roads. The tram lines on this map mean to generally avoid those chokepoints which would hinder their development. As such, the routes take on the less developed or parking-lot-occupied banks of the Sarıçay stream (green line), and the gap between the intercity road and the city sprawl (red line). A shared station north-east of the airport is possible, if the plan is to build a bridge on their junction and have the green line go under the red line. Escalators and elevators can then connect the lines. A weak-side of this dream-tram layout is the planning of Kepez and the Çanakkale industrial park. The hypothetical tram system can be developed further with a third line beginning from the industrial park (perhaps with an extended green line to connect with), making a wide turn to Karacaören to get on the Karacaören street, then to junction with the red line on the intersection with Ahmet Priştina street, follow Velibey street into Atatürk street and have a station near the stadium, then have a similar over-under bridge junction with the green line, and simply follow the Atatürk street until it terminates in Kepez. A potential fork to the green line's #3 station could go to the ferry port north of the hypothetical line, but it'd be too difficult and I'd hate to tear out the trees in the middle of that road.
