Hildesheim's unreliable and infrequent bus network makes me sad, and this map is my idea how to fix that. This is my first time branching someone else's map, because I wanted to include the S-Bahn Hannover lines for context and to add additional stops to the S4 in Hildesheim. Check out i's original map of the Hannover S-Bahn and Stadtbahn! Everything apart from the S-Bahn lines is my own work. Questions, ideas, and other comments are appreciated!
So why does Hildesheim need a tram? Hildesheim is a city with pretty much exactly 100k inhabitants. There is a university with around 8k students spread across four campuses, as well as a college with another approximately 3k students. Due to the close proximity to Hannover, a lot of people also commute between these cities. Needless to say, there is a lot of demand for local transit in Hildesheim. Despite that, Hildesheim only has a bus network of questionable reliability, whose service frequency has actually gone down in recent years. Out of the six main bus lines, currently one runs every 15 minutes, four run every 20 minutes, and one only runs half-hourly. All bus lines also pretty much exclusively run in regular car traffic. All of this often leads to overcrowding and delays, which makes a lot of people depend on the car, even for local journeys. Commuting between the different campuses of the university can also be a pain in the ass, because, while bus lines 1 and 4 at least combine for an approximate 10 minute service interval along three of the four campuses, this is far from sufficient capacity, one campus is in the middle between two bus stops and thus not easy to reach, and the southernmost campus isn't directly served by the bus network at all, and the closest bus stop, which is a 5-10min walk away, is only served by hourly buses, which depart at a time that makes it impossible to arrive at the other campuses on time for the next class. It's worth mentioning that there is also a regional bus network, which doubles as an express bus network locally, but these lines run very infrequently and in many cases irregularly and are even more prone to delays than the city buses.
In my opinion, a tram network would be hugely beneficial for Hildesheim. Trams provide more capacity and comfort than buses, even without raising the service frequency by a lot. They can also be faster and more reliable if running on dedicated tracks and not in mixed traffic. In my mind, this hypothetical tram network would ideally employ meter-gauge, bi-directional vehicles, as narrower trams would be sufficient to offer the needed upgrade in capacity, and would make dedicated tracks possible on smaller streets, while bi-directional vehicles are very versatile due to not needing turning loops and enabling boarding from either side. Examples for trams operated in similar networks in Germany are the Škoda ForCity Plus or the Stadler Tina. Specifically the latter has a version that has just been ordered in Halle (Saale), which is pretty much exactly what I'm imagining for this tram network.
Making a tram network for Hildesheim, however, is more complicated than just converting the busiest bus lines into trams, because - due to Hildesheim being rather small - a lot of the streets served by the buses are too narrow to reasonably fit a tram line, and other parts of the road network, such as the flyunders that go below the rail corridor in the eastern part of the city, are just not built in a way that would work for a tram. Thus, I'm remaking the network completely, with the current bus network as a basis, but remodelled to enable and prioritise the trams. Line colours are taken from Hildesheim's regional night bus network, plus the dark green from Hildesheim's current bus line 4.
Line breakdown:
Trams
1: As with the current bus line 1, this line connects all four campuses of the university, continuing south to my proposed S-Bahn stop at Marienburg. It then connects to the eastern and central train stations. The old bus line 1 continues on to Himmelsthür, but runs through lots of narrow streets, so the new line 1 instead takes over the western branch of bus line 6 to Bockfeld and terminates at my new S-Bahn stop at Himmelsthür.
2: The southeastern part replaces bus line 4. North of the university, this line connects to the college, similar to the old bus line 1, before continuing on to the city center and the central station, before replacing bus line 2 to Nordstadt via a loop, because the narrow streets don't allow for two-way tram traffic.
3: This line replaces bus line 3 almost exactly, only altering its path through the city center and some other small details.
4: The northern part is taken from bus line 4, skipping the Nordstadt and the central station, before taking over bus line 5 to Ochtersum. Like line 2 in the Nordstadt, line 4 also ends with a loop section around a residential area.
Bus
Main Lines
12: The main bus lines on this map are mostly stitched together from the remaining parts of the old main bus network that are not covered by the trams. Line 12 starts out at the central station, taking over bus line 1 up to HAWK-Campus, then bus line 2 up to Ochtersum, then finally line 5/43 (a local line that continues on as a regional line) up to Diekholzen.
16: Most of this line is just the old line 6, apart from the northwestern section, which takes over the old bus line 1, since the new tram line 1 replaces the western section of line 6.
18: The old bus line 8 isn't considered a "main line", but it's already close to being one. The western section of line 18 up to the central station is a slightly altered version of this old bus line 8, but line 18 continues on through the Oststadt, terminating at the old line 3 station at the psychiatric clinic.
Additional lines
10: Line 10 already exists as a university commuter service, running infrequently, lining up with class times. My version is a more streamlined express bus line, with stops at the central station, city centre, eastern station, college, the four university campuses, and terminating at the Marienburg S-Bahn stop.
11/13/17: These lines are all lower frequency lines that each serve less densely populated areas and commercial areas, as well as combining into higher frequency services in/near the city centre. The southern section of line 11 replaces the current line 11, as well as a small section of the current line 2. Line 17 north of the central station already exists under the same line number. Line 13 is based on the old line 7 between the central station and Glockensteinfeld, but has been slightly tweaked and continues on to Einum, taking over parts of the old line 3. In the Nordstadt and Fahrenheit, lines 11 and 13 combine to offer high frequency service. In the city centre, lines 13 (clockwise) and 17 (anticlockwise) form a loop that improves connectivity between the central station and the city centre.
The current real-life network consists of bus lines numbered 1-17. I decided to number my bus lines starting at 10 to make differentiation between trams and buses easier for hypothetical commuters. I also decided to ignore the current bus lines 9, 13, and 14, which each only run once or twice per day.
