Washington Metro:
Deinterlining the Blue Line with a new crosstown route. This also allows Orange And silver to avoid branching on eastern end.
Now that we have additional capacity, introducing the Brown line on the originally planed Columbia Pike alignment.
Extending the Yellow Line both north and south.
Small extensions to Green and Red.
Washington Light Rail:
Transfer of the Purple Line to WMATA. Extensions to Tysons and Largo.
New Cyan Line on the Route 7. Due to the urban form it will have somewhat shorter average station spacing than Purple to better serve local traffic. Especially in Falls Church it becomes almost a streetcar (although still on a separate lane). In tunnel under old town Alexandria.
Baltimore Subway:
Building an approximation of the original 1968 plan with some modifications. Extension of the Green Line, new Yellow (north-south) and Red (east-west) lines.
Baltimore Light Rail:
With the subway taking over the longer distance nort-south demand, light rail can be expanded and transformed into a more local service. Along the lines of a French-style tram.
One interurban service remains to Hunt Valley though.
MARC:
Unification of MARC and VRE into a joint agency under WMATA.
Electrification everywhere! Through running at Union Station! (some services)
I'm keeping the name because it sounds good backronymed into Metropolitan Area Rail Commuter. Better than Washington Area Regional Transit 🙂
Busways:
Transforming US-29 into a bus corridor with a median busway almost the entire length. Doesn't mean it will only have one service, the plan is for various lines to use it as a central trunk.
High Speed Rail:
Two tracks on NEC reserved, as on the rest of it.
Construction of the Southeast Corridor, with separate tracks beginning at Alexandria.
On the section between Union Station and Alexandria, HSR will share tracks with other passenger services. This might become a bottleneck in the future, but at least freight is completely separated.
Freight:
The new Long Bridge (real project) will allow for freight to be completely separated in downtown DC.
More controversially the entire Camden line is dedicated to freight only. Losing a commuter line sucks, however it's absolutely essential for the entire NEC to have a dedicated pair of freight tracks all the way from DC to at least Newark, and if possible Boston.
