In an alternate history Yugoslavia somehow survives 1990-1992 and continues existing as a federal state of 9 republics: Slovenia, Croatia, Dalmatia (yes this is a fantasy), Bosnia Herzegovina, Vojvodina, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia.
It joins the EU in 1999, and is now a decently developed country (similar to Poland in real world).
The railway system has continued developing. Major changes include:
- Straightening of major corridors to increase speed
- Double tracking on many sections
In order to maximally take advantage of existing capacity there are only 2 stopping patterns for passenger trains: local and express. And of course freight also operates on the same tracks.
This map presents trains following the local stopping pattern - regional and suburban. These services are a responsibility of each federal unit, and operate on a clockface schedule.
Above this there is an entire network of long distance fast/intercity trains that is not shown here, stopping only in major population centers and interchanges. Much more variable in schedule and routing.
At this time high-speed rail is still in the planning stage and not certain at all (even in fantasy not all can be perfect).
As mentioned services operate on a clockface schedule:
Base interval is 120 min, although the vast majority of services run on a 60 min interval, and very few (for example some suburban) 30 min.
On routes where multiple lines share one corridor, care is taken to schedule cadenced intervals. Timed interchanges are also used where it makes sense.
Only a small number of lines in very unpopulated areas don't justify this minimum, so those are served only occasionally or only by long distance services.
TBD:
Numeration needs some work to make it more informative about the kind of service it is.
A lot of stops can be eliminated as there are too many for modern style of rail operations, where the station interval is generally bigger than when these railways were originally built.
For those not Yugonostalgic, most of the plan is applicable to modern successor countries as well.
