a proposal by me for a heritage railway on former rail alignments in stanley, tasmania
Information:
This railway would run using two locomotives, both currently at the Tasmanian Transport Museum in Glenorchy, those being steam locomotive M5 and diesel locomotive Y4
The railway would open on weekends during the off season and during the December-February period would run every day from Wednesday to Sunday. There would be three daily services on The Junction, one a day on The Shunter, and an hourly services from 10am to 5pm on The Port. The Junction and the Shunter services can be booked online or at the ticket office, but the Port services cannot be booked. Four historical carriages would be restored for the rail operations. The Port services would be a half hour return trip, with a guided talk about the history of the area upon arrival to Fishermans Wharf, and the opportunity to watch the locomotive shunt in the loop siding at the terminus. The Junction services would leave Stanley at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm respectively. These services would travel southwards to Wiltshire Junction, the former junction with the mainline to Burnie. Passengers could alight and be taught the history of the Wiltshire area and about the closure of the Stanley-Trowutta/Smithton lines. Passengers would then return back to Stanley, the full journey taking around 1hr 15 minutes. The Shunter services would do a combination of both, going out to Fisherman's Wharf before heading down to Wihtshire, with both experiences along the way. The Shunter's one service would depart Stanley at 3:30pm. The service would get that name because that is the pattern shunting engines based at Stanley would have taken on a daily job.
A locomotive depot and small workshop would be located at Stanley, about 100 metres south of the station. A turning wye would be constructed for turning trains from the workshop into the station.
Here are some historical images of the Stanley station to give a historical precedent:
