What if Wicklow Town became Wicklow City? Buildings/development: I'm assuming very dense mixed use development, pretty much everywhere where there's a tram stop. Three to six story apartment buildings with shops at ground level. For pre-existing buildings, I'm assuming upzoning of most of those places to be able to build the same. Heavy rail commuter network: Still working on the heavy rail network, but these are the places I'd go. They're pretty much all tiny towns and villages at the moment. But giving them all railway stations is a good starting point for transit oriented development. They're all now suburbs of a city. For balancing both sides of the lines, I think I'd go: Brittas-Glendalough Arklow-Enniskerry Aughrim-Roundwood Or: Brittas-Glendalough Arklow-Roundwood Tinahely-Enniskerry Motorway: I think it'd make sense for Wicklow City to incorporate Rathnew and Ashford into it and develop everything in between. For this reason, I'd move the dual carrageway/motorway around the other side of Carraig mountain. Probably not initially, but at some point. Dart and Rosslare lines: I'm assuming the Dart is extended, probably through a Bray head tunnel, with frequency now being the same the whole way down the line. And with some speed improvements from the tunnel, dual tracking, changing alignments, and overhead lines the whole way down. I'm reinstating the Rathnew station and having the Dart terminate there. And I'm having the Rosslare Europort line terminate in Wicklow Station. New intercity: At some point, I think there'd be justification for a direct intercity line that's high speed or higher speed, without many stops. It could replace the Rosslare Europort and run all the way into Dublin with a tunnel. Presumably a tunnel wide enough to also have a Dublin metro line. I haven't worked out where exactly the line would go. Wicklow Station rebuild: Would obviously need to be built up with more platforms and tram and bus stops next to it. Trams: I've divided them into the initial build of the 1 and 2 lines to service where people already live. And then extentions and more lines and stops (and a change in route direction for the 2) for all the new development. I've tried to make it so you're always within walking distance of a tram stop and you can get anywhere from anywhere in the tram network. I've also mostly built out to the north of Wicklow. This is because there is a big motorway in the way that would need to be moved. And a big hill up the other way, which is hard for getting trams up. I think the way up I found would manage, so the trams could get to people out the Dunbur road. But it seems much easier to focus on the flat bits first. Anyway. This has been a fun exercise to think through.
