While many of Detroit's inner neighborhoods lack sufficient density today, The strategy is to use rapid transit as a catalyst to populate and revitalize Detroit. The trams and light rail have been installed while land is cheap to create demand for infill development, while also serving Detroit's denser neighborhoods. The city of Detroit alone can absorb up to 1.2 million more people, which would put it back to 1950s population levels.
BRT lines provide access to the major employment and activity centers in the suburbs and are cross-metro rapid transit corridors.
The commuter rail system connects Detroit to its suburbs as well to major cities in SE Michigan such as Ann Arbor, Lansing, Port Huron, Flint, and Toledo OH
Detroit's airport is served by 3 commuter rail lines incl a Detroit crosstown line from Utica to DTW that provides 15 minute service throughout the day.
