Map of current and future extensions/proposals for Birmingham and the surrounding areas. As far as the trams go I've stuck to the current expansion plans but also extended from Brierley Hill to Stourbridge Town (T5) via Stourbridge Jct. (taking over the shuttle) and added a brand new line using mostly old rail rights of way. This line (T6) travels from Longbridge to Dudley where it interlines with T4 & T5 then passes beneath the original tram line (T1 & T2) at Wednesbury the onto Walsall and Sutton Coldfield. T6 would use TramTrain style units, allowing higher speeds due to its mostly dedicated right of way. I've not opted for full metro as I believe the city would be better suited to a high capacity and high frequency Crossrail style tunnel. This would take the cross city line (and any future extensions) into a dedicated tunnel under the city calling at numerous stations spreading capacity across the network. The tunnel would also relieve overcrowding at New Street and better connect passengers to their destinations across the city. I have extended the line up to new stations at Alrewas, Barton-under-Needwood, & calling finally at Burton-on-Trent. This would require the electrification of the line between Lichfield Trent Valley and Burton. Some services would terminate at LTV, keeping up capacity in the core.
