Durban - Rapid Transit Expansion Plan (WIP)

Work in progress. To Do: (1) Alignment for MetroRail Lines 1, 2 & 4. (2) Adding Pinetown LRT. (3) Corridor study for circumferential MetroRail Line. (4) MetroRail Line 1 extension to Cato Ridge (Stops Added: Botha's Hill, Drummond, and Inchanga). Building a metro network for Durban/eThekwini is extremely tricky for 2 reasons: (1) Decades of systemic discrimination and segregation under the Apartheid regime has resulted in a disjointed urban landscape causing Durban's City Center to be surrounded by, historically segregated, satellite towns with the occasional Main St. with exclusively low-density single-family residential zoning (Westville, Pinetown, Chatsworth, Umlazi, KwaMashu, etc.). Despite historically neglected communities being the ones underserved by transit, the financial argument for rapid transit construction still remains weak due to a lack of infill development between these population centers. Infill development may still only be part of the solution because... (2) ... the surrounding terrain is extremely mountainous, particularly so for elevated or surface-level rapid transit. Hence, the most feasible solution I see involves: (1) Upgrading the current MetroRail (Commuter Rail) corridors for greater reliability and higher frequency operations. (2) Only building rapid transit along corridors in localized constituent towns. (3) Capital investment in at least 1 circumferential, tunneled, MetroRail (Commuter Rail) line in order to facilitate suburb-to-suburb travel in such a decentralized municipality. (4) Heavy investment in local bus routes. (5) Serious consideration for bike corridors / car-free streets in localized regions. MetroRail (Commuter Rail) lines are unchanged besides the Northern Coast Line being diverted to service King Shaka International Airport via a tunneled station underneath the Eastern Long-Term Parking Garage. As a result, Nyaninga Station will be bypassed on the Northern Coast Line.
