A map of North American high-speed rail connections that Ray Delahanty (CityNerd) identifies as promising, based on a gravity model. I put them into 5 buckets based on their scores; the highest-priority connections are in blue. Some notes: - The stations and connections are not actual alignments; they are just representative. Don't bother zooming in too far. - He uses combined statistical areas (CSAs) in the analysis, which lump together cities like DC/Baltimore and Boston/Providence. On a real alignment, there would obviously be stations at all of these locations. For cities in Canada and Mexico, he manually created CSA-equivalents. - He combines metro areas that straddle the US border, such as San Diego and Tijuana, without any penalties. - He based his analysis solely on city pairs, without considering network effects. - Network decisions are best-guesses. For example, there are several different ways you could do the Mexico network. Also, not every segment is high priority, but this map indicates the segments you'd need to build to get the high-priority connections. For example, Boston to Montreal is a priority connection by Delahanty's measure, which he chooses to achieve via a connection to Albany.
