This started as a map to incorporate various proposed projects to the North Jersey region but I've continued to expand it across the state. In 2000, NJ Transit released a plan for a potential 2020 system. Most of these projects were loosely studied or entirely conceptual and only a few implemented. This map is heavily influenced by those projects but also includes a fair bit of my own ideas. As a New Jerseyan, it's long bothered me that one of the most densely populated regions in the country doesn't have more high frequency, fixed mass transit (that does more than just go to NYC). ----NORTH JERSEY---- - PATH to EWR: A currently planned expansion that is slowly working its way towards implementation. - PATH to PA Bus Terminal and Grand Central Station: Getting the PATH train to two major transportation hubs would be beneficial. HOWEVER, the tunnels would have to go through what is likely the most densely built area (both above and below ground) in the country. Would not be easy or remotely cheap. - PATH to Secaucus Junction: Don't know if it's ever been proposed but with an expanded PATH might be worth it. Just throwing it out there. - JFK Boulevard Subway (Purple): A proposed but never implemented subway. I got a little carried away with the idea and extended it to Washington Bridge Bus terminal. - Passaic–Bergen–Hudson: Wanted a line to intersect the various branches and this proposal did just that. I also wanted a connection to the new tunnel at fort lee so created a branch line. There's no existing track for this branch and it would likely have to be below grade. - HBLR to Bayfront and Beyond: An expansion to bayfront is planned. I took it farther and sent the line North to Newark Penn and then to South Orange to take over NJT's bus route 1 which is the highest ridership NJT route. - HBLR to Bergen: Proposal to get the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to Bergen County. Added a number of infill stations along the route. - Canal Crossing , 15th, and 18th Street Stations: Three proposed stations for the HBLR. - NERL: Newark to Elizabeth Rail Link. Studied but not implemented. Didn't seem to get too far into planning so I had to flub the route a bit. Connected Bayonne to Jersey Garden's, creating a loop in the system. - Newark to Kearny and Montclair: There appears to be existing right of way that could be restored to create new branches for the Newark subway. - Paterson Line: A studied and proposed line with no official backing (yet). The 1st, 2nd, and 4th largest cities in NJ were connected so it only felt right to include the 3rd. - Staten Island Rail: Staten Island rightfully belongs to New Jersey so I considered a couple expansions for it. The north shore line is the most realistic but the west shore has also been proposed in the past. The Bayonne bridge could supposedly support rail so it's a way to connect the two sides of the river. I also made a central line down the Expressway but I'm not sure how much I like it. - Lackawanna Cut-Off: NJ Transit and Amtrak are currently working together to restore the Lackawanna cut-off with the first station at Andover set to open in a year or so. Proposals to extend it further have been discussed. I could have ended it at Stroudsburg but I know Mount Pocono is a big tourist destination. Getting it all the way out to Scranton has been discussed but that seems like an extremely long line for NJT, probably will be the domain of Amtrak. - Philipsburg Extension: Proposal to extend the Boonton and/or Raritan Valley Line to Philipsburg. - New York, Susquehanna & Western: - West Shore Line: - Jersey Shore Express Service: NJT and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority operated an Atlantic City Express Service between 2009 and 2011. With more shore connections it might be more viable now. It still runs between Penn Station and Atlantic City but also facilitates transfers to other shore destinations. ----CENTRAL JERSEY----- - Monmouth - Ocean - Middlesex Line: Several corridors were studied for this fast growing region however little progress has been made. I choose to implement two configurations. A line to connect the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line and another from the North Jersey Coast Line to the Atlantic City Line. The study only went to Lakehurst but there appears to be abandoned rail lines that could be restored to create a connection between the North and South of the network. - New Brunswick LRT: A LRT in New Brunswick was studied with a studied released as recently as 2023. I expanded the proposal to South Amboy with existing rail. - North Brunswick to Metuchen BRT (NBMX): The same study for New Brunswick LRT also proposed a BRT route connecting the two cities. - Princeton Transitway: Since the Dinky Shuttle is getting old NJT recently studied a replacement which may include a light rail and busway. Extending it beyond Princeton Station could be done by "rubber tire only" which I'm not sure just means bus or those weird trackless trams that pop up every now and again. - North Brunswick Station: New station on the North East Corridor that should happen eventually. ----SOUTH JERSEY---- - Glassboro - Camden: NJT is currently working on this extension to the River Line. - Mount Holley Line - There's a combination of rails to trails, abandoned rail, and lightly used industrial rail that would run through several communities up to Mount Holley. There are some very old proposals for such a line. - Cape May Line: Line between Hammonton and Cape May to create another shore connection. - West Trenton Rail and LRT: Proposal to extend the river line to the new commuter line. - Atlantic City Streetcar: I don't know where I got the idea but AC getting a streetcar feels like it could easily be another hair-brained, over promised, and ultimately disappointing project in the long list of projects meant to help revitalize the city. - Linwood LRT: NJT considered using an abandoned rail line to connect Linwood to AC. However, it's since been converted to a trail which I assume residents wouldn't want to part with. Also, the route intersects dozens of roads which would make fast service difficult. I extended it to Ocean City b/c connecting more of the shore is a personal goal of mine; however, this is probably the one of the least viable things on this map. Pros of this System - Connects a number of communities that aren't currently well served and makes existing infrastructure more useful. Provides the region with transit that does more than just get commuters to NYC while also creating new routes into the city. - Creates redundant routes and loops incase of outages. - Connects multiple major destinations including airports, several major shopping centers, and transit hubs. - Multiple intersections with NJ Transit, MTA, SEPTA, and Amtrak routes. - Several existing and new stations would intersect multiple lines and (hopefully) see very high ridership. Such stations could follow the Japanese/Hong Kong model where the resulting high value land around the station is leased to help fund the system. Cons - PATH to Bus Terminal and Grand Central Station would likely be one of the most complex and expensive projects in the region's history - Purple line would almost certainly need to be below grade, making it expensive. May also be operated by the Port Authority who would now have to manage a system several times as large when they've often struggled with what they already have. - Multiple river crossings would require new bridges or tunnels - A number of communities with new lines would likely not want to be connected to other communities due to demographic reasons (racism) and cause public outcry. - Several of the commuter rail extensions use still active freight rail which would require negotiations for right of way. Unfavorable agreements in the existing network already hurt performance (such as the River Line) so much of the success of these expansions relies on the ability to broker effective deals. - Extensions in the south would require work on the Pine Barrens which would likely face environmental pushback. - While the many intersecting routes in North Jersey make an extensive system, the fact that they're split between NJT light, NJT heavy, and PA rail could make transfers difficult. All systems currently have differing fare prices and don't honor each other's tickets; however, at the moment they don't intersect as heavily and thus have less motivation to. General Comments - The routing for the light rail in north jersey isn't perfect but the fact that so much of it uses existing and mostly unused right of way shows that the region has the potential for significantly better rail transit. - The Elizabeth portion of the NERL feels... wonky. It didn't get too far into planning so I didn't have a lot to work off of. - Personal opinion but in this system giving the PATH to NJ Transit feels more justified. - Really want a radial line in the South Jersey area but not sure where to put it. - There's a lot of general infrastructure that needs to accompany this to make this properly work: gateway project for higher volume to Penn, new yards, new maintenance facilities, removal of at grade crossings, electrification, feeder bus rerouting, passing tracks, multi tracking, etc...
