The Astana Light Rail Transit (LRT) project began with discussions in the early 2000s. A formal start occurred in 2011 with the establishment of Astana LRT LLP and a capsule-laying ceremony. However, actual construction did not commence immediately, and the project was suspended by 2013 due to its high cost, with a BRT system proposed as an alternative. In 2015, the project was revived through an agreement with Chinese companies. Subsequently, the LRT project faced significant delays and allegations of corruption, leaving partially constructed infrastructure. Despite these challenges, authorities decided to proceed with the LRT. By late 2024 and early 2025, substantial construction progress was reported, including the completion of concrete structures and track installation on certain sections. In January 2025, the Astana Akim announced that construction was slated for completion by summer, with the first trains anticipated for arrival in September 2025 for extensive testing, targeting an opening in early 2026. Most of the names on planned extensions are my fantasy. If it looks stupid to you, I made this looking to the source map and actually seeing geology works on Astana-Qosshy highway. And then thinking a little. Information source: https://informburo.kz/stati/novyi-genplan-astany-cto-snesut-gde-budut-novye-skoly-i-kakie-raiony-soedinit-lrt_1668593083
