Conceptual Expansion of DM(V) Rail Transit

Map is Public
created 57 weeks ago
updated 5 weeks ago
This is a conceptual expansion of rail transit, mostly in Arlington, but also including adjacent and other parts of Northern Virginia. Please note that this concept assumes ~infinite money~. Additions are made to commuter rail (VRE), rapid transit (Metro), and light rail (streetcars). As shown in line groups above, multiple organizations and entities would have jurisdiction over various additions. The additions are grouped below by type of transit (commuter rail/rapid transit/light rail). Please also note that I tried to get the alignments and grade levels as accurate as possible, but they might be off in some places. I also named some stations but left some with the default name. ~~~Commuter Rail (Virginia Railway Express)~~~ --> Manassas Line expands beyond Broad Run in existing ROW to terminate in Charlottesville, with stops at Remington, Culpeper, and Charlottesville. --> A new "Front Royal Branch" is added to the Manassas Line, with trains terminating in Front Royal and Union Station. The line runs in existing ROW and includes new stops in Gainesville and Marshall. --> A new "Winchester Line" is created, with trains running from Winchester to East Falls Church Metro, with stops at Vienna, Reston Town Center, Sterling, Ashburn, Leesburg, Purcellville, and Berryville. The concept is based on Ryan Jones's proposal to reactivate the W&OD, and the line would run primarily in/under the old W&OD ROW. New ROW would be required between Purcellville and Winchester. --> A new "Richmond-DC Line" is created, with trains running an express service between Richmond and DC with stops at Union Station, Crystal City, Alexandria, Franconia-Springfield, Fredericksburg, Ashland, Richmond-Staples Mill, and Richmond Main St. ~~~Rapid Transit (WMATA)~~~ --> Orange Line expands to Fair Oaks, with a stop in the City of Fairfax (University Dr.), in/under a combination of new ROW and I-66 ROW. --> Orange and Silver Lines have the Ballston West Entrance and a new stop in Westover. --> Blue Line Loop ("Bloop") proposal implemented, resulting in a new "Rosslyn II" station and new stops at National Harbor, Oxon Hill, Forest Heights, Bolling AFB, St. Elizabeth's, Buzzard Point, Sursum Corda, Thomas Circle, Scott Circle, West End, and Georgetown. Significant new ROW and under-grounding required. --> Yellow Line loses Eisenhower Ave and Huntington stations to the Bloop, gains Van Dorn St. and Franconia-Springfield. ~~~Light Rail (Streetcars)~~~ --> DC (DDOT) ----> New Georgetown streetcar running from new Rosslyn II station across Key Bridge and down M Street and on to New Hampshire Ave before terminating in Dupont Circle. --> Arlington (these lines are primarily ART, but would include support from the relevant adjacent jurisdictions) ----> New Arlington Blvd streetcar running from new Rosslyn II station down Ft Myer Dr. to the Route 50 ROW. The line follows Route 50 to Seven Corners and terminates near West Falls Church at the intersection of E. Annandale Rd. Best scenario for this line includes cut-and-cover for most of Route 50 (especially the eastern section around JBMHH/Ft. Myer Heights), with the streetcar at-grade. ----> New Glebe Rd streetcar running from the main Marymount University Campus down Glebe Rd to Potomac Yard, terminating at the intersection with Potomac Ave. Primary means of providing North-South service. ----> New Langston Blvd streetcar running from new Rosslyn II station down Langston Blvd into Falls Church, terminating at the intersection of S. Washington and S. Maple Ave. Includes a small detour off of Langston Blvd to the East Falls Church Metro station. Best scenario for this line includes cut-and-cover for parts of I-66, with the streetcar at grade (although they should really put almost all of it under). ----> New Shirlington streetcar running from the intersection of Route 1 and 12th St S to the Pentagon City Metro, around the mall on Army Navy Dr. and S Joyce St., down S Joyce St to S 23rd St, up S 23rd St over Arlington Ridge and back down to Army Navy Dr, following Army Navy Dr, crossing over I-395 to Glebe Rd, then proceeding down 24th St. to John Robinson, Jr. Town Square in Green Valley, then going down Shirlington Rd to Shirlington before continuing adjacent to I-395 ROW to King St and terminating at the Mark Center. Best scenario for this line (and just generally) includes under-grounding all of I-395. ----> New Washington Blvd streetcar running from the Pentagon Metro Station through the existing (and unused) Columbia Pike starter tunnel and day-lighting around Foxcroft Heights before following Washington Blvd through Clarendon and the R-B Corridor and through Westover to terminate at the East Falls Church Metro. Best scenario for this line includes cut-and-cover for all of Washington Blvd from I-395 to the Route 50 interchange. --> NVTC (regional partnerships) ----> New Columbia Pike streetcar running from the Pentagon Metro Station through the existing (and unused) Columbia Pike starter tunnel and day-lighting around Foxcroft Heights before running at-grade on Columbia Pike for its full length, terminating in Annandale. ----> New Route 1 streetcar running from the Pentagon Metro Station through a new tunnel to daylight near Long Bridge Park, then running at-grade in the Route 1 ROW south to the intersection with Slaters Ln in Alexandria, at which point the line runs on Powhatan St. down to N. Washington St. (GW Memorial Parkway). Continuing on Washington St through Old Town, the line terminates just south of the Beltway and just north of Cameron Run. Best scenario for this line includes under-ground Route 1 from Long Bridge to Route 1. ----> New Route 7 streetcar running at-grade from the Greensboro Metro Station down the full length of Route 7 to King St in Old Town, terminating at the intersection of King and Union streets.
