This is a comparison of the LA Metro Eastside Transit Corridor extension (known as Phase 2)'s potential routes.
All routings other than Metro's were not deeply studied by anyone - I literally looked at the map and said "hey it could potentially go there".
That said, here are my thoughts.
Official Alignment Proposal: Not sure why they routed it so far south - they're primarily covering industrial land (which yes is prime for redevelopment, but so is downtown Montebello). It's probably to avoid pissing off residents, though.
My Original Alignment: Somewhat naive approach, will probably be very expensive due to the large hill at Whittier Narrows.
My Alt 1: A more sensible northern alignment that hits South El Monte's density before diverting south to hook up with Metrolink / converted ROW rail service (see SoCalMove proposal for details).
My Alt 2: This is the alignment I'm happiest with. Takes a southern alignment that hits downtown Montebello, eventually stopping at the Metrolink/ROW rail hub mentioned in Alt 1. The only reason I see Metro not doing this alignment is purely disruption and complaints, as it's otherwise the best possible alignment - cheap to build and high ridership.
Edit: It does also cross the LA sub near a potential yard location, potentially causing issues.
