Fantasy Mount Isa Bus Network

Here's a little proposal for a bus network for the provincial North West Queensland city of Mount Isa. It has a population of almost 20,000, and is the biggest city in Australia without a public transport system, not even school buses! This network will serve the city, schools, shopping centres, the TAFE campus, the airport, the hospital, the railway station, the Greyhound stop and many other local attractions and points of interest. WEEKDAY ONLY ROUTES: The weekday bus routes consist of four overlapping loops going from the city centre, to the suburbs and back via one or two small local shopping centres. They would run about once per hour in each direction Monday–Friday, with increased services during peak times. Each public primary school is served by a route that connects to all the students in its catchment, while students at the city's secondary and Catholic schools may need to transfer, however, this is made easier with a central transfer point and potentially through running. WEEKEND ONLY ROUTES: Route 9 runs on weekends (and late night Fridays) as a hourly, bi-directional loop of the city. This is to preserve frequency and coverage while keeping operating costs low, as patronage will be much lower at these times. This means that journey times will be increased, but retains a reliable service to most of Mount Isa. PEAK ONLY ROUTES: These routes serve as buses to connect both students to schools and workers to industrial areas on the edge of the city. They run during peak hours on weekdays only, with very limited trips. OTHER ROUTES: Route 5 is a crosstown route connects the city to Mount Isa Airport, gives the Base Hospital more frequent service, and serves parts of Healy that are far from Route 4. It runs intermittently on both weekdays and weekends to connect with flights at the airport. Route 8 is purely a shuttle between the railway station and the bus interchange, running only to connect with The Inlander train services to and from Townsville. SPAN OF SERVICE: Peak: Monday–Friday 7am–9am, 3pm–5:30pm Off-peak: Monday–Friday 9am–3pm, 5:30pm–7pm Late nights: Friday 7pm–11pm Weekend: Saturday–Sunday 8am–6pm FREQUENCY SUMMARY (in both directions unless stated otherwise): Routes 1, 2, 3, 4: Peak: every 30 minutes Off-peak: every hour Other times: no service Route 5: Peak: every 30 minutes Off-peak: every hour Weekend: every 90 minutes Other times: no service Routes 6, 7: Peak: two services each Other times: no service Route 8: Thursday, Sunday: one service Other times: no service Route 9: Late nights: every hour Weekend: every hour
