I'm not going to call this realistic, but I don't think it is totally impossible either.
This map has 4 lines
Red Line: placed first as the spine of the system. This connects SNHU north to KMHT south, accessing residential areas, the Mall, and downtown in between. Following existing single tracked rail from SNHU to Stadium/SNHU, this stretch of track would likely need to be upgraded to triple tracks to fit the other 2 lines sharing it, as well as a freight route that is active midday. After Stadium/SNHU, it would follow a rail trail to Beech Hill, before descending below grade to reach Mall of New Hampshire and terminating at Airport.
Blue Line: second line placed. Starting at St Anselm in the West, it follows power lines at grade to a station for Pinardville, and shortly joins another rail trail before boring into the hill which holds up West Side. Three underground stops on Kelley Street and a stop outside Catholic Medical Center connect those residences, apartments, and hospital easily with the rest of the city. The line exits the hill below Notre Dame Bridge but above the Everett Turnpike, following the bridge before joining the Red Line rail and sharing the 3 downtown stops.
Yellow Line: Just a typical at grade trolley. 10 minutes headways from 5AM - 10PM, and 20 min from 10-1. I'm also unsure if the northeast spur is necessary, but keeping it for now. This service connects residences, parks, the 3 "big" stadiums, and would have dedicated foot paths to Bridge Street and Stadium/SNHU to catch the other lines. Trolley traffic would be 2 way on that loop as well.
Green Line: Between Bedford/MBTA and Stadium/SNHU, the track is theoretical. The rest follows the existing single track, and would serve as commuter rail for Nashua and Concord and basically and airport express for Downtown Manchester stations. I chose light rail simply because it is cheap. It follows the red line but only shares stops at Airport, Stadium/SNHU, and Bridge Street. Otherwise it extends North stopping at Hooksett, Suncook, South Concord, and Downtown Concord. South it stops at Bedford/MBTA, Merrimack, South Merrimack, and Nashua. This would supplement the (on hold) MBTA extension to Manchester, sharing stations at Nashua and Bedford and adding the 2 in between. This also means Concord would be connected to Boston by rail with one stop.
Stations: Those 3 downtown stations would get hectic, most of all Stadium/SNHU. This would be a stop for red, blue, and green, MBTA extension, and suggested interchange for yellow. And, reminder, would see freight traffic every now and then. Bridge street also shares the 4 lines pictured above. Bedford/MBTA and Nashua/MBTA are the planned MBTA extension stations.
Other: Something will have to be done about the at-grade crossing south of Convention Center/UNH. Likely dig that rail line below and make a bridge
Obviously, I am missing coverage in the East. Can't think of what I would like there at the moment, but I know it's not more tram lines. Gotta think about that some more.
