Just some thoughts on how to make the current Baltimore rapid transit network better. Most of this is based on past and/or present plans, with some liberties taken and personal choices shoehorned in. With some elbow grease this could be accomplished in under 20 years!
A few notes:
- I cut out the spur to Penn Station because it would be redundant with the new Yellow Line. It's faster, more reliable, and hits more useful stations than the Blue Line. Plus, the transfer from the Blue line to Penn at Mount Royal is not that bad, I've done it myself and it was quite manageable.
- I left Columbia out to save costs and because the residents of Columbia would probably not want a train to them. They're generally well-off enough that they don't need a train. Not like that's a reason to not serve them, but I feel that's more a 30-50 year plan rather than a 10-20 year plan, which is what I'm really aiming for here.
- The stop spacing on the Green line extension and Yellow line is quite close, it could stand to be a little larger but I don't want to sacrifice service area for speed here. They should be fast enough to beat traffic.
- I know the Lutherville connection with the Yellow line is likely axed because of residents' fears of crime, but it's a close enough connection that it could feasibly be built later.
- The cost of this system is severely undercalculated. With the current projections of the Red Line costing $9 Billion and the Maryland Purple Line costing over $10 Billion, just the price of the new trackage would at least match Metro Dreamin's cost for the whole system. Even with elevating the Red Line through downtown and only tunneling the sections that are absolutely necessary, it would likely still cost around $7-8 Billion. Tack on the price of the Yellow Line at around the same price and the Metro extension, that's probably gonna cost around $22 Billion, assuming the MTA cost analyzer knows what they're doing.
