Dotted lines show today's network - Credit to The Met Guy Solid lines are my proposal for the future of Kyoto's transit network, intended to reduce traffic and the overcrowded buses plaguing Kyoto today 1. Mibu infill station A new Mibu station would fix the missing connection between Hankyu, the Randen and JR, as well as filling the gap in the Sagano line to provide service to the area. 2. Kitano Line Imadegawa Extension: The Randen Kitano Line would be extended as a modern light rail line along Imadegawa-dori to the east of Kyoto. Either the lanes would have to be reduced to two to run it in the median or the line would have to be put underground. The existing section would be upgraded to accommodate longer trains, which might require the relocation/removal of some stations. 3. Kanjō Line: The Kanjō subway line would form a 3/4 circle around Kyoto, connecting underserved areas in the south, west and north of Kyoto and important temples on the edge of the city. It connects to all other lines in the city, except those heading east out of Kyoto station. 4. Kyoto BRT: Two BRT lines would be constructed in the medians of Horikawa and Sanjo avenues through the city center. Buses would through-run to local bus lines at the ends. The Horikawa river might have to be covered completely to make room, or the lanes would have to be moved to the outer ones. Additionally all bus lines would receive signal priority and dedicated lanes wherever possible. 5. Karasuma Line Iwakura Extension The Karasuma subway line would be extended two stations to the north to connect with the Eizan Railway at Iwakura. The line could provide opportunity for new development in the area. 6. Sembon Line The Sembon subway line would provide a direct connection from the west and northwest of the city to Kyoto station, connect some unserved areas and provide relief to adjacent lines. 7. Tōzai Line Umezu Extension The Tōzai subway line would be extended two stations to the west to serve the area of Umezu.
