See my Denver Great Societies Metro Map for more on the System. In the late 90's, a northeast extension of the RTD system was proposed, with three principle alternatives. Collectively dubbed the metro northeast plan, it would ultimately be cancelled in 2008, though the work done on it would lay the groundwork for the Capitol Connector Light Rail system in the 2010s. The Alternatives are as follows: Alternative 1: This was recommended to RTD as the preferred alternative, as it served the corridor with heavy metro and integrated into the rest of the system, but avoided the expensive new tunnels that alternative 2 would necessitate. Alternative 2: This was the maximum proposal, a new downtown subway under California, Welton, and Downing would connect to the same corridor northwest as the first alternative. Alternative 3: This was offered as a budget version, foregoing heavy rail in favor of a light rail line from union station following the existing rail corridor to the same terminal as the other two. This alternative could accommodate more stations, but was slower and did not offer the capacity. Ultimately the scheme was cancelled, but the corridor studies for Alt 2 were used in designing Line 1 of the Capitol Connector System, which closely mirrors its downtown alignment, though on the surface.
