Basically if Long Beach, California had a similar automated light metro system to the DLR in London, with connections to LA Metro and GLEN, my proposed freeway-median commuter rail system. Further inspiration is taken from the Vancouver SkyTrain, the Københavns Metro, the Honolulu Skyline and the Singapore MRT Downtown Line.
I'm working on the assumption that Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is going to focus on upzoning retail and industrial areas rather than razing and rebuilding suburban neighborhoods. Certain stations are placed at areas that have potential for TOD. These stations are marked with an *. * indicates select properties, ** indicates a whole lot (strip mall, town center, empty parking lot) and *** indicates an entire urban renewal.
Each branch has 12 minute headways, or 5 trains per hour (TPH) in each direction. These branches then interline, allowing certain corridors to reach shorter headways (i.e the Ocean Blvd. Subway has 3 minute headways from Anna Brown to Granada Beach, 2 minute headways at Arena/Convention Center and 4 minute headways from Cesar Chavez Park to Landmark Square and at the Toledo). Lines L1, L3 and L5 have 10 TPH per direction, as each of these lines has two branches. Lines L2 and L4 have 5 TPH per direction.
Rolling stock would be akin to the Hitachi Rail Italy Driverless Metro vehicles used in Honolulu, Copenhagen and Taipei, among others. Rail lines would implement CBTC to increase headways, safety, speed and reliability.
